A community built in one stretch, ageing on one schedule
Courtice sits between Oshawa and Bowmanville and is one of Clarington's main communities. Unlike the older centres on either side of it, most of Courtice is subdivision housing built from the 1970s onward, with the heaviest building through the 1980s and 1990s.
Houses built in the same decade tend to reach the same problems together. A builder's shower from that period is now decades into a life that its silicone and grout were never expected to last, while the tile, the pan and the enclosure are frequently in good order.

- It is treated, not covered over
- The old silicone is cut out, the mould is treated, the wall tile and grout are cleaned, and the enclosure is resealed. What sits behind the joint is dealt with rather than painted over.
Where grout has gone past cleaning, it can be recoloured to an even line or removed and replaced. Both belong to the tile and grout service rather than to a renovation.
